A Pinewood Derby without the Pinewood
It’s a crazy thought but when it comes to an Outlaw Pinewood Derby the sky should be the limit. A close friend with a knack for 3D printing took that unconventional route and his success was undeniable, securing the coveted first place in our inaugural race. He reviewed the rules and checked with me to make sure it would be allowed to run and since we had nothing around what amount of the car must come from a Pinewood Derby kit he went to work and created some remarkable 3-wheel cars. Inspired by his out of the box thinking I came up with some other options for an Outlaw Pinewood Derby car without Pinewood. Remember to check the specific rules of the outlaw Pinewood Derby event you plan to participate in, as there may be limitations or guidelines regarding the materials you can use. The key is to think outside the traditional pinewood box and explore alternative materials that allow for creativity and innovation in your car design.
Here are 10 alternative materials and methods you can explore:
3D Printing:
Utilize 3D printing technology to create a unique car body. This allows for intricate designs and precise shapes.
Aluminum Chassis:
Craft an aluminum chassis as the base for your car. Aluminum is lightweight, durable, and can be shaped easily.
Composite Materials:
Experiment with composite materials like carbon fiber or fiberglass for the body. These materials are lightweight and can be molded into various shapes. This is also a great way to make some amazing designs and unique bodies.
Plastic or PVC Body:
Construct the body from plastic or PVC. These materials are readily available, easy to shape, and can be painted or decorated to your liking.
Metal or Plastic Sheets:
Cut and shape metal or plastic sheets to form the car's body. This provides flexibility in design and is relatively easy to work with.
Wood Alternatives:
Explore alternative woods that are not traditional pinewood. Bamboo or balsa wood can be shaped and carved to create a lightweight and aerodynamic body.
Cardboard Construction:
Use sturdy cardboard for the body. Layering and shaping cardboard can provide structural integrity while allowing for creative designs. It’s likely free if you get as many Amazon deliveries as we do.
Recycled Materials:
Upcycle materials such as old CDs, plastic bottles, or aluminum cans to create a unique and eco-friendly car body.
Foam Core Board:
Construct the body using foam core board. It's lightweight, easy to cut, and can be painted or covered with decorative materials.
Metal Rods or Tubes:
Use metal rods or tubes for the frame. Shape and weld them to form the chassis, providing a sturdy foundation for your outlaw Pinewood Derby car. Tungsten, one of the densest metals could lead to some interesting weight options.
